NOTE: I will also be making some comments on general church life issues in this blog. This seems a relevant place for that.
I wonder how many people are turned off to church merely because we play the music so loud?
I have been told in the past that this is because the musicians think it is too quiet if it is not too loud. I asked at the time why we couldn't just provide more volume for them but that didn't seem to go far.
I suspect we have trained many people to expect such loud music, to the point they won't "feel God" without such high a volume. Then others, like me, either barely handle it or get turned off to the service altogether because of the volume.
It is a physical issue with me, at least to some extent, since my hearing is fairly sensitive. I know that oppressive volume during the music portion can completely ruin a service for me.
Going outside is a poor excuse, since it works against the whole point of coming to a service. Then, I may be lulled back in by a quiet segment, only to be blasted when the volume cranks back up.
I am not sure what the solution is here. I am not ministered to by the more traditional quiet service, but I am also very turned off by loud oppressive music.
I really wish I had a solution to this, but it seems to be a problem that won't go away.
